Magazines and Journals

Contributing magazine articles has been a very important part of my writing career. Currently I am a major freelance contributor to several magazines published by Key Publishing, including ‘FlyPast’ and ‘Airfix Model World’. More details of these are at the foot of this page.

Starting in the early 1980’s, I have made freelance contributions to the following magazines and publications (those marked * indicate at least 20 contributions published in that particular publication):

  • *Aeroplane Monthly (Britain)
  • *Aero International (Germany) (as well as being the joint-creator of this title)
  • Air Classics (U.S.A.)
  • *Aircraft Illustrated (Britain)
  • Air Enthusiast Quarterly (Britain)
  • *Air Pictorial (Britain)
  • *Air World International (Britain)
  • Aviation News (Britain)
  • Aviation News Magazine (Britain)
  • Classics (Classic cars, Britain)
  • *Flieger Magazin (Germany)
  • *Flypast (Britain)
  • *International Combat Arms (U.S.A.)
  • International Defense and Aerospace (U.S.A.)
  • International Defense Images (U.S.A.)
  • L+K (Czech Republic)
  • *Le Fanatique de l’Aviation (France)
  • *Luftfahrt Aviation International (Germany)
  • Military History (Britain)
  • *Pilot (Britain)
  • *Popular Mechanics (U.S.A.)
  • Practical Classics (Classic cars, Britain)
  • Wimborne Magazine (Britain)

Also contributions to several “one-off” and special anniversary publications: such as ‘FlyPast’s D-Day 50th Anniversary Special in 1994.

And yes, for my sins, I have also written in the Daily Mail ‘newspaper’ in Britain.

Of no less importance are the mainly non-model making factual reference articles for the following British model making magazines:

  • *Aircraft Modelworld
  • Airfix Magazine
  • *Airfix Model World
  • Flying Model Designer & Constructor
  • *In Scale
  • *Military In Scale
  • Model Art International
  • Model Aviation World
  • Model Trains International
  • *Plastic Kit Constructor
  • *Scale Aircraft Modelling
  • Scale Aviation Modeller
  • Scale Model Trains
  • Tamiya Model Magazine International
  • 21st Century Plastic Modeller
  • Model Aircraft (published by SAM Publications/Model Zone, sister magazine to Scale Aviation Modeller International)

It all started in the early 1980’s with ‘Scale Aircraft Modelling’ and a type-history profile on the BAC Jet Provost. I therefore owe much to both Alan W. Hall and Mike Keep for getting me up and running with magazine contributions, and these ultimately led to book work as well, as detailed elsewhere on these web pages. At a rough estimate, I appear to have had published over 600 articles and news stories, large and small, since the 1980’s.

From 2011 onwards I have written regularly for ‘Airfix Model World’ magazine, published by Key Publishing (the July 2018 issue is shown below as an example, in it I have three articles – two model show reports, and a history feature on late-mark Spitfires). As can be seen, my contributions for this magazine have mainly involved history writing and model show reports, but in addition to which there has additionally been the occasional model-making feature. I also currently write for another of Key Publishing’s magazines, the history-based ‘FlyPast’.
